Shericka Jackson has reflected on missing her 100m gold and losing to Sha'Carri Richardson in Budapest.

Shericka Jackson went into the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in the form of her life but never ticked all the goals she had on her bucket list.

The two-time world 200m champion managed to win a silver in the 100m and 4x100m and a gold in the 200m. However, she wanted gold in the 100m but narrowly lost to Sha’Carri Richardson who clocked 10.65 seconds.

For the 200m, Shericka wanted the world record too but could only afford 21.41 seconds to cross the finish line. The late Florence Griffith -Joyner’s world record stands at 21.34 seconds and the Jamaican sprint queen is still chasing it.

The 100m loss still haunts Shericka Jackson and in a previous interview with Bwoyatingz By Kareem on YouTube, she admitted that crossing the finish line, she knew the win was hers.

This was because she thought Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was her only tough competitor and since she was running close to her, Shericka’s only concern was beating her compatriot. However, Sha’Carri Richardson, on the outside lane was also watching and that’s how she managed the win.

Shericka added that if she would have watched Sha’Carri, she would have known how to execute her race well but was unsure if she could have won the race nonetheless.

“I thought I had won the race until I saw the results and then I watched the replay and then I realised what I had done and knew my coach would be upset,” Shericka Jackson said.

“Yes I was disappointed but I was still happy I got a medal and was more disappointed in the execution. I was asking myself what I could have done better and so many things were rushing through my head. Would I have dipped? Maybe but would have I won the race? So, I let it go.”

One thing that surprised her was that her coach, Stephen Francis was not frustrated and after the race, he in fact embraced her. Shericka noted that her coach gave her wise words that she will forever carry in her heart.

Going into the 200m final, she was relaxed following her coach’s words and that’s how she maintained her focus and demeanor and won the race, beating Gabby Thomas and Sha’Carri Richardson to second and third place.

“The thing is coach gave me a hug and congratulated me and that eased how I felt. I thought he would be angry but he made me feel a little bit relaxed,” she said.

“My coach was not angry and he told me one thing, ‘If you execute the race well and lose, that’s okay, but if you don’t give your all, then I’ll have a problem.’

“I was in pretty good shape for the 100m but unfortunately, I did not run another personal best but I learnt a lot from that experience since I wanted to compete against the best athletes.”

She competed sparingly in 2024 due to an injury that forced her to even miss the Paris Olympic Games but she has announced her return into training, looking to defend her 200m world title and go one place better in the 100m.
