'I was abusive' - Sha’Carri Richardson's ex-girlfriend admits to physical abuse in relationship

Sha’Carri Richardson's ex-girlfriend Janeek Brown admitted to physically abusing her during their tumultuous relationship.

Two years ago, Sha’Carri Richardson's ex-girlfriend Janeek Brown publicly admitted to physically abusing the 100m world champion during their tumultuous relationship in 2019.

The admission came after months of online speculation and public statements from both parties, shedding light on the challenges Richardson faced off the track during a difficult period in her life.

The former couple, who first met at an award show, were open about their relationship when they began dating. Richardson was 19, and Brown was 21 at the time.

Their romance, however, quickly unraveled amid frequent arguments and allegations of abuse, leading to a public breakup in 2022.

In an emotional Instagram Live session, Richardson initially shared her side of the story, revealing that her relationship with Brown had been abusive.

Richardson’s comments sparked an outpouring of support from her fans, as well as backlash against Brown, who initially denied the allegations.

However, Brown later reversed her stance and admitted to being abusive during their relationship.

“I was abusive once that there’s physical evidence of,” Brown confessed during a virtual interview with @BwouaTingz.

Acknowledging her actions, Brown explained that she was on a personal journey of self-discovery at the time.

“And we moved on, and even after then I was trying to move on from that, we still got nowhere. …Yeah, I was going through something – I was finding myself, that’s why I am coming to social media, you feel me?”

The admission marked a turning point in the narrative surrounding their relationship.

Brown continued, reflecting on her personal growth since the incident.

“So yeah, it’s a transformation; I’m going to find myself now. I may look different now,” she added.

Richardson, for her part, chose to take a balanced approach in addressing the situation.

Just before competing in the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, she defended Brown in an Instagram Live session, acknowledging that both parties were responsible for the breakdown of their relationship.

The revelations came during a challenging period for Richardson, who faced multiple personal and professional hurdles between 2021 and 2022.

Following the death of her biological mother in 2021, Richardson was disqualified from the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for marijuana, which she admitted to using to cope with her grief.

Her comeback attempts were further hindered by her failure to qualify for the 2022 World Championships, leaving her future in athletics uncertain.

By 2023, she returned to the global stage stronger than ever and her performance at the World Championships cemented her status as a world-class athlete, as she claimed the 100m World Champion title and anchored Team USA’s gold medal victory in the 4x100m relay.
