'People can express themselves now'- Usain Bolt revels in how he revolutionized track & field with his personality
Usain Bolt is famed as arguably the best sprinter to ever live and holds the world record in the 100m and the 200m events.
“I think I had, at the start during my first year,” Bolt recalled reliving one of the rarest moments when he could not keep his cool.
“At the '08 Olympics at first I was nervous because this was my first chance to win an Olympic gold medal or to win any medal, you know what I mean," he said.
"So, when I got there, I was like, ‘I know I’m ready, but I’m still nervous.’ I knew I was in the best shape of my life, but I kept wondering if it was all going to come together.”
Despite his apprehension, Bolt revealed he chose not to share his nerves with anyone, not even his coach.
“If I told my coach, ‘Coach, you know I’m nervous,’ he’d say, ‘What’s wrong with you, kid?’ You know what I mean? So, I kept it to myself,” he said, emphasizing that his self-belief and preparation ultimately helped him push through the moment.
The pressure was immense, not just for him but for his country. “Jamaica everybody was like, ‘Oh my God, this would be our first gold medal in the 100-meter sprint.’ It was a big deal,” he explained.
However, when the moment came, Bolt delivered, cementing his legacy with a gold medal and igniting Jamaica’s sprinting dominance on the world stage.
Reflecting on that experience, he added, “After I won that race, I think, after that, I never really got nervous again.”
