'I thought my first Olympics would come at LA 2028'- Great Britain's next big thing reflects on surprising Olympic journey at 17

The 17-year-old reflects on her unexpected Olympic debut in Paris, describing it as an incredible learning experience and the pinnacle of her 2024 season.

English teen sensation Phoebe Gill had an outstanding 2024 season but as she started, she never expected things to turn out like that.

One that surprised her the most was making it to the Paris Olympic Games, just at the age of 17.

Gill, just like any other athletes, went to the UK Olympic trials with the intentions of making the team but was unsure about things would turn out.

In the absence of Keely Hodgkinson, Phoebe Gill put in the work, claiming the win the two lap race and comfortably securing a slot to Paris.

At the Paris Olympic Games, it was all about experience for her, and she will vividly remember everything like it happened yesterday. She finished third in the heats of the 800m and then proceeded to the semifinal where she claimed fourth place and miss out on the final.

Her teammate, Keely Hodgkinson claimed the win in the race as Tsige Duguma and reigning world champion Mary Moraa finished second and third respectively.

In an exclusive interview with Athletics Weekly, Phoebe Gill disclosed that there were a lot of take aways from the season and he pinnacle remains making it to the Olympic Games.

"This season I learnt a lot. There was a lot of mental pressure with the new challenge of tackling senior racing but I’m very proud of myself and how I handled it. This award means a lot and it shows the hard work has paid off," she said.

“Looking back to January, I did not think that I’d be in the position that I’m in now. I thought my first Olympics would come at LA 2028.”

She expressed pride about being able to act accordingly and manage her emotions at her young age. Despite not making the final, Phoebe Gill's heart was not crushed as she explained that she managed to accomplish everything she wanted.

She blocked all the outside noise and people's expectations and experienced the Olympics in its full form from the track exploits to the Olympic village.

“I was proud of myself to cope with the pressure and feeling of an Olympics. That was such an incredible feeling. The Olympics is the pinnacle of athletics but I still couldn’t comprehend how big it actually was," she said.

“In the end, I did everything that I wanted to at the Games. I didn’t care about personal bests, getting to the final or a medal, it was just about the experience.”

She nows shifts focus to a better run in 2025 with the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan the main event of the year in track and field.
