Rosemary Wanjiru has reflected on her unexpected fifth-place finish at the Tokyo Marathon while embracing the challenges of the sport.
In the pre-race press conference, Rosemary Wanjiru had expressed all the confidence in the world about reclaiming her title but things did not go as planned.
The Kenyan was forced to settle for fifth in a time of 2:19:57, competing on a course she was very familiar with. She won the title in 2023 and not much has changed since then.
Defending champion Sutume Asefa Kebede once again showcased her prowess, claiming the win dominantly in a time of 2:16:31. Kenya’s Winfrida Moraa finished second in 2:16:56 as another Ethiopian, Hawi Feysa completed the podium after clocking 2:17:00.

Following her fifth-place finish in the race, Rosemary Wanjiru explained that she encountered some challenges during the race and unfortunately, things did not turn out as she expected.
She extended her gratitude to God for granting her the strength to finish the race amid the struggles, admitting that the nature of sports is brutal and as an athlete, it is never guaranteed that she would win all the races.
“Thank you Sir God for giving me strength to the finishing line I passed through some challenges but I'm grateful 🙏, My family My physios and the entire Adidas family and my company Starts here in Japan thank you so much for the big support ❤️,” Wanjiru shared in a post on her Instagram page.

She now shifts focus to the next assignment on her desk which she has yet to disclose. However, one thing is evident, Rosemary Wanjiru is not giving up on her dreams earlier in the season.
The Kenyan distance runner began her marathon career at the 2022 Berlin Marathon where she finished an impressive second in 2:18:00. In 2023, she won the Tokyo Marathon title before finishing second at the 2024 edition of the event.
