Stephen Francis has previously explained why Elaine Thompson Herah needs to consider moving to the United States if she is to stand any chance of overcoming her injury problems to return to the top.
The Jamaican also trained under her husband Derron Herah for two years . However, her Achilles injury in 2023 proved a major setback, as it prevented her from qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest.
The problem persisted, and it ended up sidelining her from the Paris Olympics , while casting a shadow over her efforts to defend her historic back-to-back Olympic titles in the 100m and 200m.
Her 2024 season saw her struggle for form, with ninth-place finishes at the Prefontaine Classic and the USATF New York City Grand Prix. Now, with her focus shifted to the 2025 season, Thompson-Herah is seeking a new training camp to reignite her career.

Elaine Thompson-Herah looks like she has heeded to former coach Stephen Francis' advice with regards to a new training base if she is to get back to the heights of challenging for global medals.
Rumors about a possible return to MVP Track Club or a move to train under Rana Reider have swirled in recent months. Jamaican sprint legend Gregory Haughton added fuel to the speculation when he mentioned Thompson-Herah’s presence in Florida, suggesting she had joined a new training camp.
However, Thompson-Herah’s management swiftly refuted these claims, clarifying that she was in Florida solely for Achilles treatment. Haughton later issued a statement to amend his remarks, emphasizing that while Thompson-Herah may have connections to athletes associated with the rumored camp, no official decision has been made.
“Yes, Elaine is in Florida getting treatment,” Haughton clarified, “but let it be heard here as I set the record straight—Elaine has not found a new home, plain and simple.”
Speaking candidly on The Powell’s YouTube channel in 2022, hosted by former sprinter Asafa Powell, Thompson-Herah addressed lingering criticisms over her decision to leave MVP, where she trained under legendary coach Stephen Francis.
“I get a lot of backlash when I left over how I should have never left and should have stayed,” Thompson-Herah said. “I will not explain to anybody what happened because I owe no one no explanations, it is my life. I tell myself I am a tough cookie because I will not let negative or bad comments break me. I like to see bad comments and prove those detractors wrong—it fuels me.”
As uncertainty surrounds her training arrangements, Thompson-Herah remains focused on redemption at the 2025 World Championships. For now, she is standing by her decisions, unshaken by criticism and fueled by her resolve to once again prove why she is one of the greatest sprinters in history.
