The American holds a personal best of 12.25 seconds over 100m hurdles

American hurdler Masai Russell has revealed her frustration after missing out on the world indoor title in the World Athletics Indoor Championships held in March.

The 19th edition of the international indoor track and field competition was held in March 1-3 at the Commonwealth Arena in Glasgow, United Kingdom. It was the third time, after Birmingham 2003 and 2018, that the World Indoor Championships were held in the United Kingdom, and the first time in Scotland.

Masai Russell, who bagged gold in 100m hurdles at the Paris Olympic Games said the defeat was tough to take on the chin since it was one of her targets for the year 2024.

As revealed by World Athletics, Russell who holds a personal best of 12.25 seconds over 100 m hurdles, had four goals written down – world indoor record, world indoor title, Olympic title and world outdoor record.  However, she saw the first two claimed by her training partner, the Bahamian Devynne Charlton taking gold in Glasgow in 7.65 ahead of Samba-Mayela (7.74) and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska (7.79).

“It was pretty devastating,” reflects Russell, who crossed the line fourth in 7.81. “I missed out on a medal by just being leaned out but I wasn’t going to make the same mistake in the outdoor season. It’s been amazing to see the transition from indoors to out.”

Perhaps Russell used the disappointment of missing the indoor title as well as the 2023 World Championships final to fuel her journey towards winning the 2024 Olympic 100m hurdles title, sharing how the setback motivated her comeback.

The 24-year-old finished third at the 2023 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships qualifying to represent the United States at the World Championships. The track queen also finished first at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-metre hurdles, guaranteeing her qualification for the Paris Games.
