The US sprinter has lauded his girlfriend for shaping his athletics career which has yielded back-to-back silver medals at the Olympics.

Double Olympics silver medallist Kenny Bednarek has credited his success to his girlfriend whom he says has played a major part in shaping his career.

Bednarek has been dating Indian professional golfer Sharmila Nicollet since 2020 and admits he would not have achieved what he has managed had it not been for her guidance and encouragement.

“If I didn’t meet my girlfriend in 2020, that is when COVID-19 started coming up, if I didn’t meet her, I think we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” said Bednarek.

“I don’t think I would be who I am today. She is the biggest reason why I have been so successful. Just because she is a professional athlete as well, a professional golfer and knows what it takes at that level.”

Bednarek explained how Nicollet told him to step it up when he expressed his desire to be an Olympian in future, using her own experience as a pro golfer to show him the way.

“Meeting her, I was kind of like; ‘hey I want to be an Olympian’ and she was laughing in my face saying you got to step it up,” added Bednarek.

“Without her, I do not think there would be a Kungu Fu Kenny just because she is 80-90 per cent of the reason why I am the professional athlete I am today.

“I give a lot of my success to her, even now she is helping me with a lot of things. Without her, a lot of things wouldn’t have worked.”

Bednarek has won back-to-back Olympic silver medals in the 200m and also managed the same medal at the 2022 World Championships over the distance.

Kung Fu Kenny, as he is popularly known, has been one of the most outstanding sprinters in the world this year and reached the 100m final at the Paris Olympics, finishing seventh, before a second place finish in the 200m, behind Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and ahead of world champion Noah Lyles.
