Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan was suffering from exhaustion and doubted her ability to clinch gold in Paris.
Paris Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan has revealed why choosing to participate in three races at the Paris Olympic Games left her hating herself for making that decision.
The Tokyo Olympic 10000m champion said a lack of rest and exhaustion after racing in both 5000m and 10000m, left her weak heading into the marathon.
Despite winning the marathon in an Olympic record time of 2:22:55, her victory came just 37 hours after she had won 10,000m bronze, and six days after her 5000m bronze. This meant that the Dutchwoman had barely no time to recover yet she wanted to redeem herself and earn gold for her beloved Netherlands but the hope seems to have faded.

Allyson, the multiple Olympic champion always struggled to get his out-of-shape body back on track after the offseason.
“After the 10,000m I had an ice bath and there was doping control, so I got back late to the village. I stayed awake until 6am and had maybe one or two hours’ sleep," Hassan, who won the 5000m gold in the Tokyo Olympics, exclusively revealed to World Athletics.
While she could be forgiven for thinking about the medal ceremony the following day, running the marathon bothered the 31-year-old. "Then the next day there was the medal ceremony.
