The Jamaican sprinter revealed that loyalty to Jamaica and financial responsibilities have kept him competing, despite opportunities to retire much earlier.

Two-time Olympic champion Yohan Blake has explained the reason behind his decision to continue competing despite his recent struggles.

Yohan Blake noted that if he had opted to represent another country, something that he was consistently asked to do during his heydays, he would have retired a long time ago.

However, he chose to stay loyal to Jamaica even though there was nothing to show for his hard work and the medals he had won for the country.

Yohan Blake revealed that after being the youngest athlete to win the world title at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, he thought he might be elevated to some sort of standard and given the recognition he deserved, but that never happened.

The second-fastest man alive pointed out that if he could have been running for another, he would have made millions from that and probably even just retired at the age of 21.

However, Yohan Blake has to keep pushing and showing up since track and field is his career and he has responsibilities. Yohan Blake also expressed his desire to start a family, noting that raising one would not be a walk in the park without financial stability.

“Other countries have asked me if I could go run for them…if I was running for a different country, I could have retired at 25 or 21,” Yohan Blake shared in an interview with Sim Soul Sessions.

“I have achieved so much at a young age, the youngest world champion at the age of 21 and I could have stopped there.

“When I go somewhere, I’m not saying Jamaica has to treat me like a king and I know I’m not better than anyone but we have done so much for the country and what do we have to show?”

Yohan Blake added that so many athletes who won medals for the nation retired and went back to languish in poverty, something he is so afraid of.

Such cases are not only prevalent in Jamaica but some Kenyan athletes retired after winning world and Olympic medals but are struggling to date.

Yohan Blake insisted that athletes make a lot of sacrifices since track and field is not easy and one needs true passion to excel and yet they are some of the people who struggle the most after retirement.

“Some so many athletes have retired but they don’t have anything from the country. if we were running for a different country we could have been far. I’m not done until I’m dead,” he shared.

Yohan Blake announced that the Paris Olympic Games would be his final Olympics, but he did not make the Jamaican team to the French capital.

Since he has yet to announce his retirement, fans are eager to see where he will begin his season as he seeks redemption at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
