Noah Lyles is global superstar and money has never been part of his desire to join the Grand Slam

American sprints legend Justin Gatlin has verified why Noah Lyles is right to reject the allure of joining Michael Johnson's Grand Slam for the 2025 season.

A host of athletes including Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Masai Russell, Gabby Thomas, Fred Kerley, Kenny Bednarek and Mathew Hudson will be part of the inaugural competition set for April-September 2025.

Although Lyles is interested, he has been reluctant to sign up from the beginning because the potential to earn a massive purse isn’t enough motivation for the Paris Olympic 100m champion.

Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic 100m champion in Athens, backed up Lyles' hesitation saying, "He knows exactly what he needs to do, and if he does something, that’s going to be televised. So I can’t knock it. I just think that the exposure needs to be done differently for him,” Gatlin said on the latest episode of Ready Set Go podcast.

Lyles is already among the most recognizable faces in track and field and believes that he will achieve more success through recognition rather than money. "I feel like he thinks that having his races televised is going to make a difference and a change for his success,” Gatlin, who is a two-time 100m world champion, added.

In April 2024, Johnson announced initial plans for the Grand Slam Track league, including a total of $30 million in funding from investors and strategic partners. Winners Alliance is reportedly the lead investor and operating partner.

Speaking at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, the President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, said of the league: "I welcome innovation. I also welcome external resources. If you’ve got a rising tide, everyone benefits."
