World 800m champion Mary Moraa had a weekend to forget at the inaugural leg of Grand Slam Track in Kingston but she still left Jamaica with a tidy sum of money.
Kenya’s Mary Moraa had a weekend to forget when she made her bow at the Grand Slam Track in the first leg in Kingston, Jamaica last weekend.
Moraa was among six Kenyan runners at the event, which is a brainchild of American sprint legend Michael Johnson, and while the likes of Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Agnes Jebet Ngetich walked away with the top and second-best prizes respectively, the world 800m champion was nowhere near.
This is because Moraa finished last in the 800m, a surprising result in her specialty, having clocked 2:00.97 in a race won by American Nikki Hiltz, who timed a personal best time of 1:58.23.

Moraa then withdrew from the 1,500m due to a medical issue, meaning she ended up finishing last in her category of Short Distance after garnering just one point with Ethiopian Diribe Welteji walking away with the top prize of $100,000 (Ksh13 million) after managing 20 points from the two races.

However, Moraa did not leave empty handed from the Grand Slam Track leg in Kingston as the event has something for all the eight athletes that compete in the six categories which have two races each.
At Grand Slam Track, first place attracts $100,000 (Ksh13 million), second place $50,000 (Ksh6.5 million), $30,000 (Ksh3.9 million) going to the third-place finisher, $25,000 (Ksh3.2 million) to fourth place, while fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth places attract $20,000 (Ksh2.6 million), $15,000 (Ksh1.9 million), $12,500 (Ksh1.6 million) and $10,000 (Ksh1.3 million) respectively.

Former Tottenham youth prospect bids to make history with Kenya at U-20 AFCON
Obiero, who arrived in the Rising Stars camp earlier this week, will be hoping to make the final 21-man squad for the upcoming tournament.
It means Moraa still walked away with Ksh1.3 million from the event despite her poor outing which will perhaps be a motivation for the subsequent legs with the series moving to Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
