Athletics Kenya Nairobi region chair Barnaba Korir has outlined what the federation plans to do to increase their medal haul during global events.

Athletics Kenya Youth Development Chairman Barnaba Korir has shared that the reason why Team Kenya does not always bag many medals in international events is due to the lack of investment in the sprints and field events.

Korir insisted that middle and long-distance tend to do well on the global stages but the problems come in with sprinters and field athletes who lack enough facilities to make them shine just like their counterparts.

He explained that going forward, Athletics Kenya will look to work around the clock and ensure that the athletes have conducive environments for training.

“The field events and sprints are the areas that we are weak in as a country…we have the best athletes in the middle and long-distance events but when it comes to major championships, we always lose.

This is because we don’t have good performers in the field events and sprints. We now want to focus on those areas.

We are going to ask the government and see if they can support us, especially in the centers that we have identified so that we can give the athletes the materials they require,” Korir said.

He added that so far, the Ministry of Sports has been very supportive and AK are lucky to have Sports CS Ababu Namwamba since he understands the plight of athletes very well.

“We have a very good CS who understands the importance of nurturing talent and we don’t require a lot of funds…it is just a matter of improving the small stadiums that are there for the athletes to use,” Korir said.

He added that the upcoming athletes will get all the equipment they require in order to grow their talents and bring the country medals.
