Justin Gatlin has shared insights on an American sprinter's pursuit of records set by legends like Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell.

American sprint legend Justin Gatlin has shared his thoughts on the rising ambitions of fellow countryman and Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles.

According to Gatlin, Lyles has his eyes set on rewriting sprinting history, aiming to break records set by some of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen, particularly those of Jamaican icon Usain Bolt.

In a recent episode of the Ready Set Go podcast, co-hosted by Gatlin and Rodney Green, the conversation delved into Lyles’ desire to push beyond what current and former champions have accomplished.

Lyles, who secured gold in the 100m and bronze in the 200m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is known for his bold aspirations. And according to Gatlin, the American sprinter isn’t afraid to chase after greatness.

“Noah is more so about like chasing retired athletes," Gatlin said during the podcast.

"And when I say retired athletes, and one of them is not retired, the retired athletes would be the top five, Usain Bolt, Asafa. He is looking to get the American record in the 100 and he is looking to try to get the world record in the 200."

Lyles’ personal best of 9.79 seconds in the 100m, achieved at the Paris Olympics, is undoubtedly impressive, but still far from Bolt’s seemingly untouchable 9.58-second world record, set in 2009 at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

As for the 200m, Lyles holds the American national record, clocking in at 19.31 seconds at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. However, he remains 0.12 seconds shy of Bolt's astonishing 19.19 seconds, which has stood unbroken since 2009.

Despite this, Lyles has never shied away from expressing his goal to challenge Bolt’s legacy, particularly in the 200m, a race in which Bolt is often considered untouchable.

Before the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Lyles openly declared his intentions to go after Bolt’s world record, a feat that would cement his place as one of the greatest sprinters in history.

Rodney Green, who has witnessed Lyles’ rise alongside Gatlin, also highlighted the American’s laser focus and dedication.

"Noah has always had this drive to surpass what’s already been done. That’s why he’s so dangerous—he’s never content. He wants more, and you can see it in every race he runs."

Gatlin added that Lyles’ pursuit of greatness isn’t just about medals, but about etching his name alongside the sport’s legends.

"So if his concentration areas are in these two [events], he had a fair shot at it last year to try and see in both years what he can do," Gatlin noted.

"I think they can go back and find it where they can come back and try to be a triple crown champion again at the world championships."
