Marco Arop has praised Emmanuel Wanyonyi as a 'special athlete' following his impressive performance at the Grand Slam Track.

Emanuel Wanyonyi’s performance at Grand Slam Track has earned him high praise from top athletes including Olympic 1500m champion Cole Hocker.

Now, Canadian 800m ace Marco Arop has also spoken highly of his closest challenger who has denied him a chance to shine when it matters the most.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi was nothing short of impressive in his Grand Slam Track campaign as he silenced the 1500m stars in their core event before finishing second in a very close race in the 800m.

Despite the event, Emmanuel Wanyonyi ensured Marco Arop felt his presence in the race and the Olympic silver medallist explained that he had to stretch beyond the limits to make a mark.

“He’s a special athlete, I’ve raced against him for many years and I know what he is capable of so I had this thought that if I go out fast, the only guys who would go with me would be the 800m guys especially Wanyonyi because he has done that so many times,” Marco Arop revealed in an interview with Citius Mag.

After a disappointing show in the 1500m, the reigning world champion knew he had his work cut out in the 800m, especially lining up against the reigning Olympic champion.

Arop revealed that controlling the race would give him an edge over most of his rivals and his main opposition would come from Wanyonyi and the few other 800m runners in the race.

He started the race at a fast pace, something that the 1500m runners would find difficult to keep up and his tactic paid off well despite pressure from Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

“I went out at a fast pace regardless of the conditions and I was kind of debating whether I should go all out or not but I kind of figured out that if I did, only the two or three 800m guys would keep up and pressure me. Wanyonyi came up at the right time and I kind of made the same response,” Marco Arop said.

Marco Arop was confident of finishing in the podium bracket in the 800m and 1500m but his hopes were shattered in the latter as he could only afford a sixth-place finish.

The Canadian runner revealed that the race was slow and he actually thought it was a good thing but his reaction time in the final stages was poor.

He admitted that the other runners had a better chance, with Emmanuel Wanyonyi capitalizing on the slow pace to unleash a finishing kick and eventually take the win.

“I felt like I kind of dropped the ball in the 1500m, I saw them get away from me and I kind of tried to respond but it wasn’t there. I knew I had to regather myself, recuperate and come back with something stronger,” Marco Arop said.

Arop started his season with a 3000m race at the Alumni Bulldog Relays where he claimed the win before the Grand Slam Track.
