Hellen Obiri's mentorship has inspired Kenyan athletes to pursue greatness in the 400m hurdles, a discipline dominated globally by stars like Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Hellen Obiri is a mentor to many athletes and there is no doubt that anyone who seeks advice from the two-time Boston Marathon champion always flourishing.

Mary Moraa is one of the Kenyan stars who heeded Obiri’s advice to switch from the 400m to the 800m and look at her now, she is dominating the two-lap race and has made a name for herself.

Obiri’s decision came after she witnessed Moraa struggling at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Moraa competed in the 400m and could not make it past the semifinal, something that really bothered her since other Kenyan athletes had made the final and others even won medals.

Switching to the 800m was a great decision for Moraa and she is now a top medal contender in all major championships and is regarded as a potential threat to other formidable runners.

Now, Vanice Kerubo Nyagisera hopes that Hellen Obiri’s advice will propel her to greater heights and she will achieve what Mary Moraa has achieved and even more than that.

She used to compete in longer distances but injuries threatened to end her career but after consultation with Obiri, she switched to the 400m hurdles and it has not been all rosy on this side, but it’s much better.

“Watching legends like Hellen Obiri inspired me. I felt I could achieve similar greatness. I trained with Hellen Obiri in Ngong,” Vanice said as quoted by Athletics News.

“When I struggled with persistent injuries, she advised me to focus on sprints and leave long-distance events. That advice was a turning point, and I am proud of who I am today.”

She wants to go back to her winning form in 2019 where she claimed top honours at the African Games in Morocco, Rabat and hopefully follow in the footsteps of Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

Sydney is the world record holder in the 400m hurdles and the reigning Olympic champion over distance. She also won the gold medals at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

However, her journey to the top has not been like climbing a sugar candy as she has been forced to work without professional assistance for a while.

Her parents have been a very great pillar in her growth chipping in where they can in terms of getting her training gear, stadium fees and transport.

She was on a maternity break and resumed training in 2023 with her main priority then being to cut on her weight. In 2024, she qualified for the African Games and the World Athletics and she has greater goals for 2025.

“I have a very understanding coach, and we both believe we can achieve our Tokyo goal,” she revealed.

“Hurdles is a highly tactical event. In Kenya, we face challenges like limited facilities and a shortage of specialized coaches.

“Before joining the Kenya Police Team, I trained without a coach. If young athletes start with proper guidance and resources, Kenya can excel even further in this discipline.”
