Reigning Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri finished second in her season opener at the Houston Half Marathon.
Reigning New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri managed a second-place finish at the Houston Half Marathon on Sunday, January 14.
Passing the 5km mark, Obiri was in the lead with Kebede following her closely. Buze Diribe was running is two seconds back.
As they passed the mark, there was a gap to Mestawut Fikir (15:47) and Weini Kelati (15:48), which was not far off American record pace early on.

As they approached the 10km mark, Obiri and Kebede had slightly picked up the pace and they went through the 10km mark in 30:38. At this point, Diriba had dropped way back and she clocked 31:21 as Weini Kelati and Mestawut Fikir split 31:26.

Passing th e 15km mark, the Ethiopian, Kebede was now in the lead, with Obiri running closely behind her. Kebede then took charge at the 20km mark, displaying class ahead of Obiri.
Kebede then put up a good fight to cross the finish line first in 1:04:37 as Obiri finished second in 1:06:07. Another Ethiopian, Buze Kejela completed the podium.

Defending champion Hellen Obiri has explained why she chose to make a return to the Boston Marathon as she gears up for the Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, the men’s race was also a hotly contested race as American Diego Estrada was leading th pack passing the 5km mark. Milkesa Tolosa of Ethiopia was running in second place as Kenya’s Peter Njeru was in fourth place.
Estrada and Tolosa were still running in first and second places and Njeru had now climbed to second place. Another Ethiopian, Jemal Yimer had also climbed up and was running in fifth place.
Passing the 15km mark, Njeru was running in second place with Tolosa still running in second place. The American had been pushed to fourth place as Wesley Kiptoo was now running in fourth place.

After failing to make her full marathon debut at the 2023 Tokyo Marathon, Vicoty Chepngeno will finally do it at the Chevron Houston Marathon.
However, with the finish line in sight, Yimer came from behind and took the top prize, clocking 1:00:42 to cross the finish line. Kiptoo clocked 1:00:43 for a second-place finish as Tolosa completed the podium, clocking 1:00:45.
