John Korir reveals training regiment behind Chicago Marathon win
John Korir, who ran a personal best time to claim victory at the Chicago Marathon, has revealed the secret to his dominant display.
“He was winning all the road races, you got to learn to win and he learned to win and he had been dominating and he was fourth here before and he run well in Boston and so, it was his turn to win and this was the perfect time for it,” Ron Mann said.
He observed that at the Boston Marathon, John Korir made a move but it was too hard and he eventually fizzled out and missed out on a podium finish. The tactician also explained that Korir’s training sessions have been very effective in ensuring he was ready for the challenge.
John Korir had also competed at the Chicago Marathon in 2023 where he finished fourth hence his mastery of the course. He explained that this season, John Korir has been focused on improving his tempo runs, unlike the previous years when he was just racing for the fun of it.
“It’s called the signature, and you run four 400m and 3km, so you are doing 12 four hundreds and two sets of 3km all on a minute recovery. There’s nothing more than a minute recovery. That was in Kenya…we try and control that because he doesn’t even run that much faster and I try and keep it around 65/64 somewhere in that range and we don’t want him to take off and run a 52/53 and something like that,” he said.
“What he has really focused on, more so this year than the previous years is running his tempo runs longer and faster. We’ve extended those out, he was running them 12km and now he’s 15km to 18km of long tempo running at race pace altitude.”
