Zharnel Hughes, Great Britain's fastest man has clapped back at triple world champion Noah Lyles for constantly dismissing him.

Great Britain’s fastest man Zharnel Hughes has clapped back at Noah Lyles, pleading with him to talk less or rather just keep quiet.

The triple world champion has always been cocky, hitting out at his track rivals with Hughes being one of the victims. At the Diamond League Meeting in London last season, Lyles and Hughes were up against each other in the 200m.

However, during a pre-race press conference, Lyles dismissed Hughes as just another person to beat, something that did not sit well with Hughes. The conference was featured in the Sprint docuseries, with Lyles hinting that Hughes lacks main character energy.

“He’s just another person on the map - another person to beat. If you don’t have main character energy, track and field ain’t for you,” Lyles said.

“That’s what I can see in people’s eyes. You have to truly believe when you go into a race that you are going to win every time. You have to have the mindset of a god. I’m a showman,” he added.

In a recent interview, Hughes noted that Lyles is constantly talking, adding that it maybe that’s where he gains his confidence.

“I was like, ‘This guy… He just needs to shut up. He’s still talking. I didn’t know he really said that much about me. Then I saw the preview,” Hughes said as per the Telegraph.

“I was like ‘Oh, this guy can talk. I know you talk but I didn’t know you talk that much’. Obviously me being a competitor it raised all the red in me. My girlfriend is the one who keeps me calm,” he added.

Hughes added that he uses the criticism to work smart and ensure he proves every one of his competitors wrong. Hughes channeled that energy to win a bronze in the men’s 100m at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and going to the Olympics, he will be out to continue the hot streak.

Lyles and Hughes will clash at the Diamond League Meeting in London on Saturday before the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“He just has a loose mouth - he just likes to talk. I guess that’s how he gets his confidence, so I can’t blame him. He is performing as well so I have to give him his credit. But I’m prepared. I’m focusing on myself and my execution and staying in my lane and giving it my best shot,” Hughes said of Lyles.

Hughes has been down with a hamstring injury and he missed the UK Championships. Saturday’s race will be his first since he missed the championships.
