Justin Gatlin has explained how modern sprinters like Noah Lyles are differen from 'intimidating' sprinters of his generation, such as Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell.
"Super honorable mention goes to Jesse Owens," Gatlin stated in an episode of the Ready Set Go podcast, pausing to underscore the weight of his words.
"You know, for basically showing us that we can go out there and accomplish something truly amazing, even in the face of adversity. I mean, think about it, he did this against the Nazis, deep in Germany. And what did he tell them? 'I'm still going to do me.'"
Gatlin’s admiration for Owens extended beyond mere accomplishments. "He could have gone out there and said, 'You know what? Y’all ain’t gonna get me killed out here. I’ll just go ahead and settle for silver.' But nah, he didn’t do that. He did what he did," he added.
Leaning forward, Gatlin added, "Super, super honorable mention. Man, he's beyond top five, you know what I mean? He did what he did."
Owens, a name synonymous with excellence and defiance against prejudice, rose to international fame during the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.
At a time when then Germany leader Adolf Hitler sought to use the Games as a showcase for Aryan superiority, Owens, an African-American athlete, shattered those notions with unmatched performances on the track and field.
Over the course of the Games, he won an unprecedented four gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay.
