The 2004 Olympic champion explained why Kishane Thompson has a strong chance of winning gold at the 2025 World Championships despite inexperience costing him gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

American icon Justin Gatlin has explained why Kishane Thompson has a better shot at beating Noah Lyles, Fred Kerley and Co. and winning the gold medal at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The 2004 Olympic 100m champion pointed out that Kishane Thompson was dominant at the Jamaican Olympic trials, winning the men's 100m final in 9.77 seconds, the fastest time in the world in 2024.

Inexperience cost him the gold medal at the Paris Olympic Games where he took silver home with Noah Lyles winning the gold medal. However, Justin Gatlin was impressed by the Jamaican youngster’s strong mindset since he managed to beat everyone close to him and Noah Lyles was the only one who beat him, thanks to his experience.

The race at the Olympics was Kishane Thompson’s first major championship and taking a silver medal remains a huge confidence booster as he eyes a ticket to the 2025 World Championships. Justin Gatlin warned that Kishane Thompson will certainly be back to take what belongs to him, this time around with the much-needed experience.

“For Kishane, I think he has the best uptick right now, and why I say that is because he leading up from the Jamaican trials through the Olympics, he looked like an unbeatable guy and getting to the Olympics, I think it was a situation that happened to where your toughest opponent isn’t near you and you only fixated on running against athletes that are next to you, which you do beat,” Justin Gatlin said on his Ready Set Go podcast.

“But the guy on the outside that you were worried about, that you couldn’t see, it was a reason why you were worried about it and he took the gold. I think for him, it’s going to be more of a learning curve but for the physical aspect of things, I think he is ahead of the game right now,” he added.

On his part, the Olympic silver medallist has struggled with injuries for the better part of the season after the Paris Olympic Games. He was confirmed for a few Diamond League Meetings but did not show up due to injuries.

However, come next season, Kishane Thompson will be working on improving his fitness and when he gets back to the grind, people will watch him compete to his full potential.
