The former athlete pointed out what she would change to help Team USA’s men’s 4x100m relay team, which has struggled to secure Olympic gold since 2000.

The mastermind behind America’s 4x100 women’s relay team Mechelle Lewis Freeman has shared the few things she would change if given a chance to coach the men’s side.

The men’s relay side has struggled to make an impact on the Olympic stage and the last time they won a gold medal was at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Great Britain dethroned Team USA at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games as Trinidad and Tobago took top honours in 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Jamaica then won the titles in 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2016 Rio Olympics before Italy took top honours at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Canada then won the title at the Paris Olympic Games where Team USA were disqualified for faulty baton exchanges.

Freeman pointed out that there are two ways to handle things when it comes to coaching a relay team. The American mastermind explained that she always focuses on looking at the external factors since that has worked out statistically and you would never go wrong in such a case.

“I can just say that it’s really hard decisions that have to be made in a very high-pressure moment and some of those decisions go against high majority of expectations. Either you are going to operate in that small chance of I mean that small window of what you really think is best or you have those external factors that are going to just outweigh that moment and if I coach any team,” Freeman said on the Ready Set Go podcast.

“I would make sure that I always keep that standard that this is the best decision based on this process and this is why. Now, I may get fussed out really badly but at least you’re operating in a system that has proven statistically. And if you have to go back to school days statistically, this is the moment for winning, then I would make any decision based on that.”

She has successfully coached the women’s team and her nuggets of wisdom could be helpful for the men’s side that has struggled for years.

Freeman continues to make Team USA lethal and at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, she hopes the formidable team of Twanisha Terry, Sha’Carri Richardson, Melissa Jefferson and Gabby Thomas will show up once again.
