Ministry of Sports spined Athletics Kenya's efforts to give the government undue credit and selling point for controversial housing plan.
The government of Kenya treated the world to a spectacle at State House when they hosted multiple record breaker Faith Kipyegon last week. The overriding theme was a three bedroomed house from the state under the affordable housing program.
Yet all that was a charade organized by the Ministry of Sports and very much embraced by State House. The government offered five million shillings but the house….. nada.

On 31st May 2023 Athletics Kenya (AK) unveiled a partnership with mortgage company, Housing Finance, through its banking subsidiary HFCK, in which the over 6,000 athletes registered with AK stood to benefit from subsidized rates while purchasing homes.
“Many times we have heard and read stories of sportsmen and women living in abject poverty despite bringing glory to the country. Many of them are struggling to pay rent or are incurring a lot of expenses towards the same. With this new partnership, as an athlete, you are assured that you will always have a roof over your head,” AK president Jack Tuwei bellowed at the launch

Kipyegon smashed the 1500m world record in Italy then immortalized her name in the pantheons of greatness one week later by lowering the 5000m record in the French capital while leaving an erstwhile unbeatable Letesenbet Gidey helplessly reeling in her wake.

The Ministry of Sports, after getting wind of Athletics Kenya’s plan jumped on the opportunity and twisted the narrative to earn the government some needed respite from heightened pressure from overburdened citizenry.
"What can you do? Nothing. You just let them do what they want to do. It's only unfortunate that they misled the president about the whole house thing. If you look at the reward scheme unveiled by the ministry there's nothing like a house anywhere. They only talk of cash prizes," a helpless Athletics Kenya official intimated to Pulsesports.co.ke
What would have been a simple, organized reception of a true sportswoman turned into a circus and political posturing. The planned event at JKIA was switched to State House in the dead of night leaving some journalists without proper information.
