Veteran athletics coach John Smith has requested fans to give him patience as he aims to transform the Jamaican sprint queen through his magical ways.

Veteran coach John Smith is positive that Jamaican sprinter Briana Williams has the potential to become one of Jamaica’s greatest sprinters like Shericka Jackson, Veronica Campbell, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce among others.

The 21-year-old joined John Smith’s camp in March of this year and was hoping for a breakthrough moment, however, things did not go as planned. She had a disastrous season, missing out on the Paris Olympic Games but the coach is confident that if given time, he would mould the youngster into a lethal sprinter.

After joining the camp, Williams will get a chance to meet veteran sprinters like Africa’s fastest woman Marie-Josée Ta Lou and learn from them. The decision was not an easy one to make but she took the leap of faith and hopes things will work out well for her.

One thing stands out, her coach has so much belief in her potential as he told Sports Max that Williams has the discipline and her natural speed is out of this world. He disclosed that one of her shortcomings is her mindset and that’s one thing they are looking to sharpen.

“I’m not a magician, but give me some time, and I do magic. She has the basis to become one of the most formidable Jamaican sprinters of all time,” Smith said as per Sports Max.

“It’s about sharpening the tools, mind, body, and soul. The tools need to be kept sharp and in harmony, and from there, it’s in God’s hands.

“It’s not about unlearning what she’s done before but adding to it. You don’t throw the stew out; you add to the stew.”

John Smith emphasised William’s mindset and he wants to do away with her feeling pressure in the latter stages of the races as she has admitted that is a big problem that she needs to address.

The veteran tactician explained that having a weak mindset prevents an athlete from achieving most of their goals and in this case, Williams having a great finish in her races. He is optimistic that a weak mindset will be a non-issue in the coming years, revealing that the Jamaican youngster has a willing heart to learn.

“Fear stops you from buying into the final analysis. We’re working on manifesting a perfect finish, so she can run free to win, rather than running for a time,” he added.

This year, Briana Williams ended her season with a sixth-place finish in the 100m race at the Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern. She was just fresh from missing out on the 100m and 200m slots to the Paris Olympic Games.
