Geoffrey Kamworor is preparing for a comeback at the New York Marathon after injuries forced him to withdraw from recent races, expressing confidence in his cautious training program.

Geoffrey Kamworor has explained how injuries have slowed him down in the past few seasons as he gears up for a grand return to the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3.

The two-time New York City marathon champion revealed that the injuries have been a huge setback, forcing him to withdraw from a series of races. He had been confirmed for last year’s New York City Marathon but withdrew from the race due to an injury setback.

He also withdrew from the London Marathon earlier this year and his New York City Marathon race will be his first road race of the season after finishing fourth at the Kenyan Cross-Country Championships earlier. However, he has since exuded confidence ahead of the marathon, explaining that he has been cautious in training and is ready to attack the course.

“In the last two marathons, I withdrew due to an injury but I got back to the track again and got good training towards the New York Marathon…all went well and I hope on Sunday, nothing will happen, no problems,” Geoffrey Kamworor told Letsrun.com.

The five-time world cross country champion has been training in a very cautious manner to avoid the injuries but he remains confident about reaping something great from running in the streets of New York.

He has competed there several times, notching up victories in 2017 and 2019 and finishing second in 2015. He also rounded up the podium in 2018 and will be hoping to build on those impressive performances to produce a great run one more time.

“I’m looking forward to a great race. The injury was on the same leg but different parts. I got a good time to train so my training went well and I think my body is good, and I’ll give it a try. I did a lot of controlled training to avoid injuries and my main focus here is to try and come back strong,” Kamworor said.

“I don’t know how things will go because my training was very controlled…I did slower workouts and less impact. I normally do a lot of bike to avoid impact training. It means a lot to me to be back in New York because I have a lot of great memories…I started feeling better in June and started build up training for New York in July. My confidence is okay, the field is strong but I’ll do my best.”

He lines up against a formidable field comprising reigning Olympic marathon champion and New York City Marathon defending champion Tamirat Tola. Former champion Evans Chebet will also be in the mix to reclaim his title with Abdi Nageeye, Edward Cheserek and Shura Kitata also making the list.
