Fred Kerley clarified that although he aimed to break Usain Bolt’s 100m world record, a few setbacks prevented him from executing it as planned.

Fred Kerley has clarified on his message about shattering Usain Bolt’s 100m world record and why it did not happen the time he had expected to execute it.

Speaking on the Ready Set Go podcast, the Olympic 100m bronze medallist explained that he had put in the work in training and was looking to shatter the world record in his next race but things did not unfold the way he expected.

His next race would be the New York City Grand Prix where he did not race after a series of false starts and he elected not to run after staying in the blocks for a long time. After that race, Fred Kerley parted ways with his sponsors Asics whom he had signed with in February 2023 when his contract with Nike expired at the end of 2022.

He explained that sharing the tweet about going after Usain Bolt’s world record of 9.58 seconds at the 2009 World Athletics Championships final in Berlin, Germany was not to threaten anybody but he was actually intending to shatter the record.

“That was not putting people on notice…the next time I stepped on the track, it was supposed to be a world record because what I did in training, it was stupid, so if you translate that to a track meet, it would have been good. But, New York happened, the way you’re supposed to, for my success. That’s how I knew, I was getting back to Fred Kerley,” the former world champion said.

He has had a great season besides the setback at the New York City Grand Prix. After that, he proceeded to run at the US Olympic trials, finishing third in the men’s 100m final behind Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek and sealing a ticket to the Paris Olympics.

In Paris, he finished third in the men’s 100m final with USA’s men’s 4x100m relay team being disqualified due to faulty baton exchanges. After the Olympics, he raced in a series of Diamond League Meetings before heading to the final in Brussels where he finished third in the men’s 100m and fifth in the 200m.
