The veteran tactician opened up about how the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games will play a crucial role when it comes to nurturing talent ahead of the LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Ferdinand Omanyala’s coach Geoffrey Kimani has detailed why the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, the first ever Olympic Games to be held in Africa, is very crucial as the country prepares for the LA 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Kimani shared that that the youth are the future and if not well taken care of, then the quality of the sport in the country will decline greatly. The veteran tactician added that at this stage, the youngsters are developing and learning about the sport and they should be treated with utmost care.

He noted that at the youth stage, the youngsters should not be pressured to win medals but to learn about the sport they are interested in and understand the different dynamics of the sport before they get to the stage where they are ready to go for the medals.

“It’s good that these games are coming to Africa and we have just finished Paris but we are planning for the next event immediately. The youth is an important pathway to glory because the kids who are going to the 2026 event are the ones who will be ready for the 2032 Olympic Games,” Kimani said.

“We can’t emphasise much about kids getting into sports, understand the requirements of that sport and also grow physically in terms of their ability to compete. It’s also a very sensitive age group because emotionally they are still growing, emotionally in the sense that you don’t want to put a lot of pressure on them with issues of medals and all that,” he added.

The coach added that at the youth stage, the young athletes should go out there to explore and have fun. He challenged the coaches who work with young athletes to also aim to improve their fitness day by day.

“This age group is just for them to enjoy and understand the sport they are engaging in and for the people taking care of them to improve their physical attributes,” he added.
