Top athletes including Ferdinand Omanyala, Mary Moraa, Noah Lyles and Letsile Tebogo have learnt the qualification criteria for the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou as they compete for spots in the Tokyo World Championships.

Ferdinand Omanyala, Mary Moraa, Noah Lyles and Letsile Tebogo have their work cut out as World Athletics have unveiled the qualification system for the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou in 2025.

The event is scheduled for May 10 and 11 and Guangzhou will look to host top athletes from different parts of the world. The athletes will be out to fight for relay places at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later that year.

The event in China will be the seventh edition of the World Athletics Relays and the first time the event is held in China. Next year’s event roaster will comprise five relay disciplines including the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m, plus the mixed 4x400m. World Athletics further noted that 32 teams will be entered in each of those.

It will be a relief for the top 16 teams in each discipline that were in action at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games since they automatically qualify for the World Athletics Relays. The host country may also enter one team in each discipline.

The remaining 16 teams will be determined through the top lists in the qualification period between January 1 and April 13. The top 14 teams in each of the five disciplines at the World Athletics Relays will automatically qualify for places at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

World Athletics explained that any athlete aged at least 16 on December 31, 2025, may compete but athletes younger than 16 by that time may not compete.

A maximum of one team from any one member can compete in each relay event and a maximum of eight athletes may be entered for each Relay Team. Any four athletes among those entered for the competition may then be used in the composition of the team.
