Ferdinand Omanyala: How Kenyan speedster faired against Noah Lyles, Kishane Thompson & Co in 2024
Kenyan sprint sensation Ferdinand Omanyala put up the joint second fastest time of 2024 yet failed to deliver on the biggest stage of them all.
Omanyala, who is training at the Kenyatta University track in Nairobi, is determined to bounce back after a mixed 2024 campaign.
Sharing a snippet of his return to training on Instagram, the sprinter revealed the mental and physical challenges of preparation.
“Sometimes the mind is willing but the body is not. Here is when coach shouts 'mind over everything,' but the only thing in your mind is finishing that last run. Cheers to many 'mind over matter' shouts,” Omanyala captioned his post, giving fans a glimpse into his rigorous sessions.
The African record holder, who had a disappointing outing at the Paris Olympics where he failed to progress beyond the semi-final heat, is eager to improve his performance on the global stage.
In Paris, the spotlight fell on Lyles, Kerley, and Thompson, who dominated the finals, but Omanyala is confident that 2025 will offer a chance for redemption.
The Kenyan sprinter’s immediate focus is the 2025 World Indoor Championships, set for February, where he aims to improve on his fourth-place finish from 2024.
Looking ahead, Omanyala has his sights firmly set on the Tokyo World Athletics Championships later in the year, determined to better his seventh-place finish from the 2023 edition in Budapest.
