Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala remained positive despite losing to Akani Simbine at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala has detailed why he was not disappointed to lose the 100m race to Akani Simbine at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.

Ferdinand Omanyala went into the race as the defending champion, having clocked 9.78 seconds in the previous edition of the race held in 2023.

However, in this year’s edition, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion was forced to finish second as South Africa’s Akani Simbine claimed the win.

Akani Simbine clocked a world-leading time of 9.90 seconds as Ferdinand Omanyala came in second in 10.00 seconds.

Failing to defend a title is always painful but not for Ferdinand Omanyala this time around as he explained the reason behind his reaction.

Omanyala and Akani Simbine went neck and neck to the finish line, with the latter ultimately carrying the day.

Ferdinand Omanyala revealed that Akani Simbine always brings out the best in him and he was happy to give the fans a chance to experience that in real-time.

He also pointed out that achieving the season's best is a good sign that he is slowly improving. Ferdinand Omanyala was also in awe of the crowd and could not overlook their power and focus on what he failed to achieve.

“I mean, he is a good athlete and I’m happy that we brought out the competition and I’m looking forward to the season,” Ferdinand Omanyala said in an interview after the race.

“The race was good, I posted a season-best so I’m happy. The crowd is massive and I love it here, I always love Botswana and of course, I’ll come back.”

Ferdinand Omanyala skipped the indoor tour but has already kickstarted his outdoor campaign. He competed at the Thika Stadium where he claimed top honours.

The 29-year-old then went to South Africa, finishing second at the ASA Athletics Grand Prix 1, at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria. He then won the race at the ASA Athletics Grand Prix 2 at the UJ Stadium in Johannesburg.

He then competed at the 3rd National Trials at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala before finishing second at the FNB Botswana Golden Grand Prix.
