Faith Kipyegon overcame a challenging setback in the 5000m to clinch her historic third consecutive Olympic title in the 1500m.

Faith Kipyegon etched her name in the annals of Olympic history by becoming the first woman to secure three consecutive gold medals in the 1500m.

The race in Paris was a masterclass in tactical running with Kipyegon biding her time amidst a formidable field of competitors on Saturday.

Despite the pressure, she executed a perfect race strategy propelling herself from a calculated position in the pack to seize the lead in the dramatic final lap.

"It's a big, big achievement. I was really looking forward to defending my title, and I had a dream. It’s amazing to me that I completed it. I'm so, so happy.

This is history. I managed to make history. I've done it. This is an amazing honour; to win the gold medal in the 1500m was my key target," she said after the race.

Earlier in the Games, Kipyegon had endured a rollercoaster of emotions in the 5000m, initially being disqualified for obstruction, only to be reinstated after a successful appeal.

The incident, while distressing, did not deter her; it instead seemed to fuel her determination as she stepped onto the 1500m track.

"After the disappointment in the 5000m, it took a lot of energy from me.I didn't sleep until yesterday. It was like, 'What is going on?," Kipyegon said in post-race interview.

The competition in the 1500m was fierce, with several athletes who had clocked under four minutes this year alone.

Among her chief rivals was Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay who set a brisk early pace but could not sustain it eventually falling back as the race progressed.

Kipyegon’s experience and strategic insight shone through as she overtook Tsegay and the rest of the field securing her victory with a new Olympic record.

This triumph marks Kipyegon’s seventh global title at the senior level, adding another gold medal to a collection that began to accumulate nearly a decade ago.

Her journey from cross-country origins to middle-distance domination reflects not only her versatile athletic prowess but also her relentless pursuit of excellence.
