Faith Kipyegon has disclosed the one thing that made her break records at will and win medals during her impressive 2023 track and field season.

Double world record holder Faith Kipyegon has enjoyed a glamorous 2023 season from winning medals to breaking world records and she has shared what propelled her to stardom.

The 2023 track and field season saw her shatter the 1500m, 5000m, and one-mile world records at the Diamond League Meetings in Florence, Paris, and Monaco respectively.

However, her 5000m world record was broken by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay at the Prefontaine Classic, the Diamond League Meeting final.

The 29-year-old also bagged double gold (1500m and 5000m) at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and also recently became the first Kenyan woman to be crowned World Athlete of the Year.

“I wrote in my diary that 2023 will be my special year and my dream came true. I’ve been working very hard to achieve the 1500m world record which was still missing in my pocket," Kipyegon told BBC Sport.

"What I changed a lot was believing in myself, I think I was not believing in myself before, that I can do what I did this year,”

The reigning Olympic 1500m champion added that athletes should practice patience and things will just fall into place for them. She also narrated how her daughter, Alyn, changed her mentality concerning life.

“Everything in life goes step by step…at the end, you will just achieve what you want. She (Alyn) changed my mentality because you know, when you’re still a young girl you just enjoy the world and the money you have," she added.

"However, when you have a baby, I think, it changed my mentality to know that I have someone who looks up to me as a mentor. It really changed my life."

She also emphasised on the art of patience and learning how to balance between family and training.
