Faith Kipyegon has explained why the first of her three Olympic 1500 meter medals won at the 2016 games remains the best of her career.

Three-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon has built an Olympics games legacy particularly in the 1500m.

Of all her illustrious career achievements, one particular moments remains to be her best experience and that is her groundbreaking victory at the 2016 Rio Olympics, which marked the beginning of her dominance in middle-distance running.

Recalling her experience in Rio in a past interview with Olympics.com, Kipyegon described it as transformative.

“I think it was my best experience, and I was seeing myself as a young girl coming from the junior ranks and still developing toward the senior category. I did my best,” she said.

“I saw (Genzebe) Dibaba was there, Sifan (Hassan) was there, but for me, I just believed in myself and believed in my training.”

Kipyegon’s belief paid off spectacularly as she stormed to victory in the 1500m final, clocking a time of 4:08.92.

She defeated a world-class field that included Dutch star Sifan Hassan and Ethiopian great Genzebe Dibaba, securing her place in history as Kenya’s first female Olympic gold medalist in the event.

Beyond the personal glory, Kipyegon’s triumph had a profound impact on her community.

“Many people benefited from that gold medal. For example, my village got electricity after that,” she revealed, highlighting the transformative power of her Rio Olympics triumph.

Kipyegon’s success didn’t stop in Rio. She went on to claim gold medals at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics in 2021 and most recently at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In Paris, she set an Olympic record with a stunning time of 3:51.29, becoming the first athlete in history to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 1500m.

Kipyegon's journey from a promising junior athlete to a global icon has been marked by resilience, self-belief, and an unwavering commitment to her craft with her story continuing to serve as an inspiration, not only to aspiring athletes but also to her community and fans worldwide.
