Kenya's Evans Chebet, who missed out on last year's edition of the New York Marathon, is out to reclaim the title against defending champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia.

The 2022 New York City Marathon champion, Evans Chebet is eager to reclaim his past glories at the 53rd edition of the race on Sunday, November 3.

After missing the 2023 event due to injury, Chebet returns with renewed vigor and a revised strategy, determined to prove he still belongs among the world’s marathon elite.

Chebet’s absence last year left the door open for Ethiopia’s Tamirat Tola, who seized the title.

Now, Chebet is looking to recapture the crown and reassert himself in New York.

Reflecting on his preparation, the 35-year-old Kenyan champion shared his confidence in a recent interview with Citius Mag

“This time, training is good. I have trained well. There has been no disturbance in training, so I decided to come back here (New York) and win again, like in 2022. I’ve had to change tactics so that this time around, maybe I will challenge," he said.

The changes in Chebet’s training regimen seem to reflect his intentions of keeping up with the evolving landscape of marathon racing.

“People run faster on this course. Even me, I’m faster on this course, so maybe I’ll try to challenge. I’m in better shape, and the long runs are faster," he noted.

Only a year ago, many were already debating whether Chebet had asserted himself as one of the best marathoners in the world.

Chebet’s stellar performances in 2022 and early 2023, including victories at the Boston Marathon in both 2022 and 2023, alongside his New York win certainly made a compelling case.

However, setbacks soon followed as his injury last year meant he couldn’t defend his New York title.

To add to the former champion's turmoil, despite his impressive marathon resume, he wasn’t selected in Kenya's Olympic team.

Even his strong showing at Boston this spring, where he finished third, raised questions about whether he could sustain the form he captured in 2022.

For Chebet, the New York Marathon this weekend represents a chance to answer those questions once and for all.
