Evaline Chirchir out to challenge Amane Beriso for top honours at Valencia Marathon

The 26-year-old is is the only Kenyan representative to confirm participation but she is up against defending champion Amane Beriso of Ethiopia.

Evaline Chirchir will hope to improve her time when she steps on the road for the Valencia marathon on December 1 in Spain.

Chirchir boasts a personal best 0f 2:22:11 she managed in April this year in Daegu, Korea where she finished third. Known for her persistence, Chirchir will likely give 2022 Valencia marathon winner Amane Beriso a run for her money. The Ethiopian is the pre-race favourite and will attempt to improve her course record.

Beriso hit the headlines in Valencia two years ago when she won in a course record of 2:14:58, which at the time was the third-fastest performance in history. She went on to win the world title in Budapest in 2023, then placed third at this year’s Tokyo Marathon in 2:16:58 before finishing fifth at the Olympic Games in Paris.

She’ll be joined in Valencia by three compatriots who’ve bettered 2:19: London and Chicago podium finisher Megertu Alemu, 2023 Valencia third-place finisher Hiwot Gebrekidan, and Tiruye Mesfin. Ugandan record-holder Stella Chesang and 2020 London Marathon runner-up Sara Hall of the USA.
