Wanyonyi took down a seasoned pool of 1500m specialists like Josh Kerr, Cole Hocker & Yared Nuguse to clich the Kingston Grand Slam Track title.

Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi stunned the middle distance world with a statement victory at the Grand Slam Track meet in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday night, taking down all three Paris 2024 Olympic 1500m medalists in their own specialist events.

In a race loaded with elite names, Wanyonyi clocked 3.35.18 to claim an emphatic win ahead of American dup Yared Nuguse (3.35.36) and Cole Hocker (3.35.52), while British stars Neil Gourley (3.35.60) and World champion Josh Kerr (3.35.61) finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The shock result came despite the race being tailored to suit the 1500m specialists. Hocker set a modest early pace by leading through 400m in 59 seconds and 800m in 2:00.

That tempo failed to drop Wanyonyi, even as fellow 800m runner Marco Arop began to fade with a lap to go.

With 200 meters remaining, Nuguse surged into the lead, closely followed by Kerr, while Wanyonyi sat patiently just behind. Hocker, meanwhile, had slipped toward the back but began a desperate push in the final bend.

However, as the field entered the home straight, Wanyonyi unleashed a withering kick, blowing past Nuguse to seal an unlikely victory. Hocker’s late charge wasn’t enough to catch the top two, and Kerr faded in the final meters, losing out to Gourley.

Top 5 Best Clubs in Kenyan Premier League History

The top five clubs in Kenyan Premier League history have helped shape the country's football legacy through their historic achievements, passionate fanbases, and consistent contributions to the growth of the sport.

Arop ended up more than four seconds adrift in sixth, while Bryce Hoppel and Mohamed Attaoui rounded out the field.

What makes Wanyonyi’s triumph even more remarkable is the fact that his previous best over 1500m stood at a modest 3:43.19, set in Nairobi in 2022.

However, the 20-year-old Kenyan has shown hints of his range and endurance in recent years. He even briefly held  the world road mile record (3:54.6) in Germany in 2024  and clinched gold in the mixed relay at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships.

But Wanyonyi's core weapon remains his devastating 800m speed, boasting a personal best of 1:41.11 - equal with Wilson Kipketer and  a time only the great David Rudisha has bettered.

Wanyonyi will now be hoping to complete the double in his specialist 800m event on Sunday.
