Eliud Kipchoge will watch this year's Berlin Marathon from the comfort of his home but he is expecting surprises having been part of the race six times before.
Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge is expecting anything from this year’s edition of the Berlin Marathon where he will just be watching the race in the stands.
The Berlin Marathon is one of Kipchoge’s favourite races, having set two world records and won a historic five titles in the German capital. This year will witness a new champion as Kipchoge will not be competing at the event.
In an interview with Olympics.com, Eliud Kipchoge explained that he is grateful to the fans who walked with him and would always be out to cheer him the six times he raced in Berlin. He claimed top honours in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2023 and finished second in 2013.

Millions set aside for top finishers & record breakers at Berlin Marathon
The Berlin Marathon offers substantial prize money, with top finishers and record-breakers standing to earn millions, though five-time champion Eliud Kipchoge will not compete this year.
“For me [this year] I could have just been there as one of the fans and a past winner of Berlin to celebrate the 50 years. To just thank the fans and the organizers for the many years of support,” Eliud Kipchoge said.
“Berlin is full of surprises. I expect anything. If both line-ups are ready - men and women - they will have good races,” Kipchoge added.
He set world records twice in Berlin and knows how fast the course can be.
