The five-time Berlin Marathon champion has explained what was going on in his mind as he withdrew from the men's Olympic marathon and why he could not finish the race.
Five-time Berlin Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge has disclosed what was going through his mind as he withdrew from the men’s marathon at the Paris Olympic Games.
Slightly after the 30km, the four-time London Marathon champion waited for the last athlete to pass him and stopped. Kipchoge was proud of his efforts, noting that failures are those who never try.
Going into the Paris Olympic Games, Kipchoge was looking to become the first man to win three Olympic gold medals in the marathon. He claimed his first Olympic title in the marathon in 2016 in Rio before defending his title at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

“Failure is that person who doesn’t try…I tried to win the third one but it was not my day and that’s how the sport is. You know, if all of us can be positive in life, we’ll go far. In a curtain, there are flowers and weeds and if you concentrate on the weeds, the flowers can’t grow. Let us concentrate on the flowers,” Kipchoge said upon landing at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The two-time Olympic champion added that he enjoyed himself in Paris. Kipchoge was elated to have met runners from different countries. He added that in sports, you win some and lose some and his setback in Paris will not stop him from chasing more glory.
“Paris was good…it was the best Olympics ever. I think everybody watched but you know sport is like that, today you are up, tomorrow you are down. You need to understand that. It’s always said that you can’t chase two rabbits at a go. Paris was another rabbit, so I have to go back and check for another one. I have to go and see what opportunities are there for me to grab,” he added.
