Eliud Kipchoge back to the roads to contest shorter distance
After an early exit at the Paris Olympics marathon, Eliud Kipchoge is set to return to competition, marking his first short-distance race since 2016.
“It’s wonderful to see another @nike EK [Eliud Kipchoge] collection released. Knowing that every runner can now experience it fills me with pride,” Kipchoge posted on social media.
“The red of the sole evokes the dust of the trails where I like to run, while the green reflects the nature that surrounds and fuels our passion. I hope this inspires you to chase your own finish lines, we all run as one.”
According to Nike, the Zoom Fly 6 will help Kipchoge on days when he needs to push the pace.
Kipchoge uses different shoes during training for various workouts; be it long, easy runs, fartleks or hills, and requires a shoe that borrows traditional components from racing footwear, like carbon fiber plates and unique midsole geometries, and translates them into a more durable shoe for year-round training.
Nike are thrilled that they worked alongside Kipchoge to come up with the latest shoe, crediting the marathoner for giving them constant feedback on what they need to change to make his running comfortable and successful.
“We've started to call Eliud our Product Line Manager on the ground. He’s doing hand sketches and writing dedicated notes about our prototypes — That’s his baseline. Over the last couple years, he’s gone to the next level of building feedback sheets, giving them to his running camp team-mates and asking them to give their own notes. He’s the world’s best marathoner, but he actually feels like a member of our product team,” said Elliott Heath, Sr Expert of Running Footwear at Nike.

A look into the men's marathon world record progression from legendary Paul Tergat to the late Kelvin Kiptum
Kelvin Kiptum’s untimely passing leaves his sub-two-hour marathon goal unfulfilled, but the evolution of marathon times, Kenyan dominance, and technological advancements signal the likelihood of sub-two-hour marathons becoming common.
Kipchoge had a difficult 2024 season by his lofty standards when he finished 10th in Tokyo, his worst ever, and also failed to complete a race for the first time, having dropped out after 31km at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 39-year-old is no stranger to super shoes, having broken records wearing a number of them. He set his first world record in Berlin of 1:01:39 in 2018 wearing Nike Vaporfly before making history by becoming the first man to run a marathon under two hours, managing 1:59:40 in Vienna, in a race christened INEOS 1:59 Challenge, while donning the superior Alphafly model.
