Edwin Kurgat finishes third in 3000m at the London Diamond League as Switzerland's Dominic Lobalu set a new meet record with his victory.

Edwin Kurgat could only finish third as Kenyans struggled in the men's 3000m in the 2024 London Diamond League classic- the last one until the Paris 2024 Olympic games.

Kurgat set a personal best time of 7.28.53 to finish second runner up behind Dominic Lobalu of Switzerland, who strategised his race well before finding some pace in the last 100 meters to stroll from third to finish first on 7.27.68,  ahead of American Grant Fisher, who finished on 7.27.99.

Cornelius Kemboi finished fifth on 7.33.56 while Emmanuel Kiplagat was eighth on 7.34.59. None of the three are in the Kenyan team for the Olympic games, with the team consisting of World Bronze Medallist Abraham Kibiwott, Simone Koech and Amos Serem.

"It was a great race for me taking the win and the PB. It was a big battle in the last 150m so I was very pleased to have come out on top so such a small margin and in a big PB for me," Lobalu said after the race.

Kurgat, who is part of the 5000m team, believes he is still ready for Paris despite his finish at the end.

"Throughout the race I was feeling good, really composed. This was the race where I wanted to run good to get ready for the Olympics so I'm glad with how I ran.

"I'm feeling confident going in to Paris, running under 7:30 is a big achievement for me and now I'm just ready for what's to come. The crowd was amazing, they helped push me to get it finished.
