Sharon Lokedi is nervous ahead of the New York City Marathon owing to the quality field that the women's race has attracted.

Defending champion Sharon Lokedi is under pressure to deliver at the New York City Marathon owing to the quality of the field this year’s edition has assembled.

Lokedi won last year’s edition of the race in style, clocking a Personal Best time of 2:23:23 to cut the tape first. She will be searching for her second victory but she faces very tough opposition.

The field has attracted the likes of former world marathon record holder Brigid Kosgei, world 10,000m record holder Letesenbet Gidey, Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir, and reigning Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri among others.

Obiri and Lokedi will be meeting for the second time in the streets of New York after making their debuts last year where the former finished sixth.

“Trust me, you get nervous deep down…you just don’t show it but it’s tough. But I’m also excited just knowing that it’s a mini-Olympic," she said.

"There are all these big names and I know they are really good and I’m also in the mix. I never imagined I would be here and now I’ll be lining up with very strong women.

"It’s very exciting but I also don’t want to worry about it. I want to focus on the now and focus on what the future holds. It’s going to be tough but I also have to be tougher,” added Lokedi.
