Agnes Ngetich was in a class of her own in her half marathon debut in Valencia as Yomif Kejelcha surprised Kenyans to take the win in a new world record, shattering the previous record by Jacob Kiplimo.
Agnes Ngetich and Yomif Kejelcha ran tactical races to dominate the women’s and men’s races at the Valencia Half Marathon.
Agnes Ngetich always does magic every time she toes the line of any event and the Valencia Half Marathon was no exception. The Kenyan road running sensation controlled the race from gun to tape, eventually crossing the finish line in 1:03:04.
Her time threaten Letesenbet Gidey’s world record of 1:02:52 that was set in 2021 on the same course. The race saw Fotyen Tesfay finish second after sticking onto the 10km world record holder throughout the race.

Tesfay crossed the finish line in a time of 1:03:21 as Lilian Kasait, the World Cross country silver medallist, rounding up the podium in a time of 1:03:32.
The men’s race was a bit different as Kenyans dominated throughout the race but Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha had other plans as they approached the finish line.
Passing the 10km mark, Daniel Mateiko was leading the heavily stacked field that had tons of Ethiopian runners who were out to dethrone the Kenyan. Isaiah Lasoi, another Kenyan, was also looking comfortable running in the leading pack.
Yomif Kejelcha was also holding onto the Kenyan charge and looking very poised and ready to attck when need be. Passing the 15km mark, Lasoi had taken the mantle with Daniel Mateiko now running in second place.
Kejelcha had maintained running in third-place as the Ethiopian duo of Gemechu Dida and Selemon Barega were running closely behind him. Vincent Langat, another Kenyan, was running behind the Ethiopian trio.
Nearing the finish line, Kejelcha who had been observing his competitors, unleashed a finishing kick to sprint to the finish line first and claim the win in a time of 57:30, obliterating Jacob Kiplimo's previous world record of 57:31. Daniel Mateiko was forced to finish second in the hotly contested race as he clocked 58:17.
