World record could be threatened as Emmanuel Wanyonyi faces strong contenders at the Silesia Diamond League's 800m event.

Three days after his sensational performance that tied him for the second-fastest 800m time ever recorded Emmanuel Wanyonyi is geared up for another remarkable race at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial meeting in Silesia, Poland.

The 20-year-old runner, who matched the former world record of 1:41.11 set by Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer is now seen as a potential threat to the standing world record of 1:40.91 held by David Rudisha since the 2012 Olympics.

Wanyonyi is not the only one in the spotlight as the event has attracted a formidable array of athletes making this one of the most anticipated races in the Diamond League this season.

Canadian world champion Marco Arop is entering the competition hot on Wanyonyi's heels with a personal best only 0.09 seconds shy of Wanyonyi’s recent time.

His presence ensures a fierce competition heightening the stakes for what could be a record-threatening showdown.

Adding to the competitive mix is Bryce Hoppel of the USA who boasts a season-best of 1:41.67 signaling his readiness to challenge the top spots.

Not far behind is Mohamed Attaoui from Spain with an impressive best of 1:42.04 this year hinting at his potential to disrupt the leading duo’s plans.

Belgians Elliott Crestan and Kenyans Aaron Kemei Cheminingwa and Wyclif Kinyamal have also posted times below 1:42.10 this season and are also in the race.

British contender Max Burgin and American Hobbs Kessler, with their respective season bests of 1:43.50 and 1:43.64 are prepared to make their mark and challenge the leaders.

Local hopeful Bartosz Kitliński who will be expecting to be cheered on by the home crowd and his compatriot Patrick Sieradzki will be looking to exceed personal expectations with Kitliński having reached a season and personal best of 1:45.13, and Sieradzki peaking at 1:45.89.

The international field is further bolstered by Sweden’s Andreas Kramer and France’s Gabriel Tual who bring substantial times of 1:43.13 and 1:41.61, respectively.

This gathering of elite athletes is reminiscent of the dramatic men’s 800m final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

But the Olympic champion Wanyonyi remains confident in his abilities as he revealed in an interview after Laussane Diamond League.

“I expect to win everything for this season because my body is looking very well and I thank my coach for training me."
