Daniel Simiu has shared the reason why he let Sabastian Sawe win the Half Marathon at the World Road Running Championships.
World 10,000m silver medallist Daniel Simiu has disclosed that it was his wish to let Sabastian Sawe win the Half Marathon at the World Road Running Championships that happened over the weekend.
As they approached the final stretch, Simiu was seen making a gesture and smiling at Sawe who passed him and claimed victory in the race.

Africa's fastest man is not resting on his laurels and is utilising his off-season very well.
Sawe clocked 59:10 ahead of compatriots Simiu (59:14) and Samwel Nyamai Mailu (59:19) who finished second and third respectively.
Simiu noted that he willingly let Sawe take top honours in the race since he was yet to win any global title.
“It’s not that was not strong…I wanted to tell the world that there are good people out there and it’s not always about winning.
"I wanted Sawe to win because I have been on the world stage so I wanted him to win and I wanted to send a message to the world that there is humanity.

"You can come first and you give your competitor a chance to win. If I wanted to win, I could have won easily,” Simiu said.
He noted that it was not something they discussed at the event since he has a good heart and he wanted Team Kenya to shine.

Daniel Simiu has come out to share what his gesture to Sabastian Sawe meant during the dramatic men's half marathon in Riga, Latvia.
“I wanted to send the message that it’s not all about winning. It was just something that came to my mind and I decided to do it because I have a good heart. I saluted him because I wanted him to win,” he said.
Simiu has enjoyed a blissful 2023 season. He won the silver medal in the men’s 10,000m at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
