Daniel Ebenyo narrowly missed out on the International Fair Play Award won by Ehiopia's Letesenbet Gidey.

Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey has emerged victorious as the recipient of the International Fair Play Award at the World Athletics Awards 2023.

However, it was not without stiff competition, as 10,000m silver medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Daniel Ebenyo found himself among the finalists.

While Ebenyo's commendable gesture touched the hearts of many during the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, it was Gidey's compassionate act at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest that ultimately secured her the prestigious accolade.

Following a selection process that involved fan nominations, the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP), and World Athletics, a jury was formed to compile a shortlist of fair play moments.

Fans across the globe were then invited to cast their votes via World Athletics' social media platforms, ultimately determining the moment that best embodied fair play.

Gidey's selfless act of kindness unfolded during the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in 2023.

After securing the silver medal in the women's 10,000m race, Gidey displayed an incredible act of sportsmanship by rushing to comfort Netherlands' Sifan Hassan, who had suffered a dramatic fall on the home straight.

Gidey's gesture of empathy resonated deeply with the jury and fans alike, earning her the coveted International Fair Play Award.

In a virtual meeting, Gidey was presented with the award by Sunil Sabharwal, CIFP Secretary General, and World Athletics Executive Board Member.

"When Sifan fell, my heart was broken. I know the feeling of falling. When people are happy, I'm happy. I feel sad when they're sad. I am happy to receive the Fair Play Award 2023. Thank you," said Gidey.

Meanwhile, Daniel Ebenyo showcased a remarkable act of sportsmanship that earned him a place among the finalists for the International Fair Play Award.

During the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga, Ebenyo displayed an incredible gesture by saluting his teammate, Sebastian Sawe, as Sawe overtook him to claim the gold medal.

This year's nominations for the International Fair Play Award introduced an exciting element of fan participation through social media.

Sports enthusiasts worldwide had the unique opportunity to voice their opinions and contribute to the recognition of acts of integrity and sportsmanship in the world of athletics.

Another notable finalist for the award was Britain's Jessica Warner-Judd, celebrated for her exceptional sportsmanship.

In a touching display of solidarity and encouragement, Warner-Judd exhibited patience by waiting to congratulate the last finisher in a race.
