Paralympic champion Hunter Woodhall and wife Tara Davis-Woodhall have revealed the sad reality that exists in track & field following the sprint race between Noah Lyles and IShowSpeed.

Paralympic champion Hunter Woodhall is saddened by the huge pay disparities between track and field stars and other sports.

Hunter Woodhall, husband to Olympics long jump champion Tara Davis-Woodhall, expressed his shock that Noah Lyles would pocket $100,000 from a social media banter event yet athletes have to run several meets or championships to make such an amount in a season.

Lyles had a 50m dash showdown with YouTube sensation IShowSpeed this week, when the race was streamed live online, with the Olympics 100m champion winning the contest after the entertainer had started well.

The prize on offer had been $100,000 after Speed had claimed that he would floor Lyles but he was left asking for a rematch after the sprint king went past him in the final stretch, to the excitement of fans.

While the showdown got fans excited, with some even claiming Lyles was not good enough, Hunter Woodhall is looking at what was at stake instead, comparing it with what professional athletes run for after months and years of training.

“Noah Lyles and Speed raced for $100,000. To put it in perspective, Noah Lyles made more on this than he made winning the Indoor World Championships… 30 grand, Outdoor World Championships, 50 grand, and even the Olympic Games, which he only made 50 grand. With Team USA, he made 87.5,” Hunter Woodhall said via a social media post.

It is a reality that leaves him saddened, given even World Championships or Olympics gold medal winners do not earn such amounts, yet a banter race, which did not even meet the professional threshold of 100m, could fetch $100,000.

To put it in context, gold medalists at the 2023 World Championships were taking home $70,000 each while at the Paris Olympics, World Athletics became the first association to start offering prize money, with only gold medalists rewarded with $50,000.

It got Hunter Woodhall and his wife Tara calling on Speed to consider another showdown with them if they would also stand a chance of claiming $100,000.

“He got more for 50m race on social media than winning the Olympic Games. Speed, come race me. Come race me,” added Hunter Woodhall with Tara calling for a long jump showdown: “Come jump come jump.”

Hunter and Tara had an impressive 2024 season, the former winning gold in the men’s 400m T-62 and bronze in 4x100m mixed relay at the Paralympics Games, while the latter claimed the long jump crown at the Paris Olympics.
