Christian Coleman: How former world champion made more headlines in 2024 for dating Sha’Carri Richardson than winning races

Christian Coleman is among sprinters seeking to change the narrative next year after news of his rumored relationship with Sha’Carri Richardson overshadowed what he did on the track in 2024.

As a number of athletes prepare for the 2025 season, former world champion Christian Coleman is among those who will be out to change the narrative.

Coleman had a tough season that started with so much promise but did not end well. The 28-year-old started the season like a house on fire, dominating the indoor events but he found the going tough in the outdoors.

The 2019 100m world champion won the Millrose Games as well as the US Indoor Championships and asserted his authority by winning the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland in March.

That made him the man to beat and he laid down the marker by winning the season-opening Xiamen Diamond League before second place at Suzhou in 100m and 200m respectively in April. He followed it up with the 100m win at the Prefontaine Classic in May.

That set the stage for the Olympics trials the following month but Coleman met his waterloo.

He failed to clinch the US ticket in the 100m and 200m, ending the trials as one of the biggest losers, having been considered one of the men to beat heading into the event.

By this time, rumours of Coleman dating fellow sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson were widespread. The two had been spotted together at a number of events while when one of them participated in a race, the other was in the stands to offer support.

While they have never publicly announced the status of their relationship, the two have more than ‘made it official’ going by the lovey-dovey moments, photos and clips posted online.

This has seen Coleman make more headlines this year on matters concerning his private life than his athletics career.

At the Paris Olympics, where runners he had beaten earlier in the season like Noah Lyles, Fred Kerley and Kenny Bednarek took centre stage, Coleman had the last chance at redemption.

He lined up for Team USA in the 4x100m relay alongside Bednarek, Kyree King and Kerley but it ended in a painfully embarrassing fashion as they were disqualified following a botched baton exchange.

Starting the race for the Americans, Coleman bangled his handover to Bednarek. The exchange was late and Bednarek had to stop completely to accept the baton and by the time he received it, Team USA was out of position.

They ended up finishing seventh but they were disqualified for running out of zone as Coleman had passed the baton out of the handoff zone.

It added another dark cloud to Coleman’s season and even though he went on to finish second at both the Rome Diamond and the season finale in Brussels, it was not a successful year by his very high standards.

Heading into 2025, Coleman, now working with Richardson’s coach Dennis Mitchell, will hope to right those wrongs with the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan the best possible opportunity to silence his doubters.
