The 27-year-old missed the podium in Paris despite breaking the US national record by more than half a second

American 800m specialist Bryce Hoppel is targeting a podium finish in the 2025 World Championships after falling short at the Paris Olympics.

The reigning 800m world indoor champion became the first US runner to go under 1:42 in the Olympic final, while breaking the national record by more than half a second with a time of 1:41.67.

Despite his achievement, the 27-year-old settled for fourth position in the French capital as 20-year-old Emmanuel Wanyonyi won the Olympic gold medal in 1:41.19, edging Canada’s Marco Arop by just 0.01, on August 10.

“It’s great for the 800m, great for the sport, to see some of the all-time greats out there running faster than some people ever have,” Hoppel told World Athletics. “It's really fun to be a part of that. I just have to work hard and somehow figure out how to beat them.”

His comment perhaps is a suggestion that the World Championships would be an ideal avenue to show his prowess on the track that he belongs among the very best in his specialty.

Hoppel, who is also a seven-time U.S. champion and two-time NCAA champion over the distance, hopes to carry on with the Olympic momentum heading into next year. Although he termed his Paris performance heartbreaking, there's room for improvement for the Texas-born athlete who will still be in his prime by the time the September 13-21 2025 Tokyo World Championships in Japan's busy capital.

Hoppel ranks seventh in the world all-time top 10 with 2024 producing so many fast times.
