Brian Komen hopes to be included in the men's 1500m team to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games following his win at the African Championships.

African Games 1500m champion Brian Komen hopes to be added to the Olympic team following his majestic show at the African Championships in Douala, Cameroon.

Komen was crowned the African Champion after he won the 1500m in 3:33.94 with another Kenyan, Boaz Kiprugut finishing third in the race.

During the Kenyan Olympic trials, Komen finished a disappointing fifth in the race won by youngster Reynold Cheruiyot. Kyumbe Munguti finished second as Timothy Cheruiyot completed the podium in the race.

Cheruiyot and Reynold have already attained qualification times for the event but Munguti is yet to and Komen believes he can be the right fit for a replacement.

He has been in great shape so far this season winning the national title and reigning supreme in the two continental showpieces, the African Games and the African Championships.

“I’m very ready for it and I hope to make the team and I believe God will give me strength and I will go and do my best and conquer,” Komen said.

The 25-year-old added that they wanted to badly win a gold medal for Kenya and was over the moon to have achieved his goal.

“We had planned for it…we wanted gold and it’s nice that we have brought gold and I’m happy and I know my nation is happy,” he added.

Meanwhile, the qualification and ranking period for all individual events, other than the 10,000m, marathon, combined events and race walks, will be between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024. The time for qualification in the men’s 1500m is 3:33.50.

As per the International Olympic Committee, all performances must be achieved during competitions organised or authorised by World Athletics, its Area Associations or its National Federations in accordance with its rules and published on the World Athletics Global Calendar.
