ATHLETICS: Brave Kenyan men tasked to bring back 5000m glory after 18 years of hurt

Abigael Wafula 10:00 - 24.08.2023

The race will start at 8:00 p.m. East African Time.

Benjamin Limo was in a class of his own as he destroyed a strong field during the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland to take top honours in the men’s 5000m and since then, Kenya has not tasted what it feels like to win a gold medal in the race.

Tonight, August 24, four men, Nicholas Kimeli, Jacob Krop, Cornelius Kemboi, and Ishmael Kipkurui will take on tough opponents in the men’s 5000m in their operation to reclaim the gold after 18 years of dreaming about it.

Kemboi and Kipkorir will be competing in Heat One, which will start at 8:00 p.m. Both will face tough opposition since defending champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be in action in the Heat.

Kemboi has had a mixed season, finishing on the podium in some of his races and performing poorly in others. He heads to the World Championships with the hope of making a mark on the global stage for the first time ever in his career.

Kimeli has already tested himself on the track in the Hungarian capital since he was in action in the 10,000m. He unfortunately faded to finish eighth but he has now learnt his mistakes and will be hoping to upset the Norwegian.

Ingebrigtsen means business when he takes on the strong opponents since he is coming from a disappointing loss in the 1500m. He went to the 1500m race as a favourite to win but failed to live up to the billing.

Another one to watch out for in Heat One is Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei who is just coming from bagging the third successive world title in the 10,000m. Cheptegei goes into the race with hopes of bagging a double and he will definitely put in the work.

Heat Two will have Krop and youngster Kipkurui who also have their work cut out. Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi goes into the race as a potential dethroner to the Kenyan duo. He is also coming from a disappointing show in the 10,000m and will definitely be looking to bounce back.

Burundi’s Rodrigue Kwizera takes the challenge to the track after a great run on the roads and Spain’s Thierry Ndikumwenayo will also be in action. Another Ethiopian, Yomif Kejelcha will also be in action and will enjoy his compatriot’s company as they seek to make an impact.

Krop and Kipkurui will be competing against a deep field and they will have to put in the work and effort if they are to leave the stage with something good.
